Day 6: A Mesa to Grandas de Salime, 19.86 km, 12.31 miles
Because a walk to Santiago de Compostela is a very unique and personal experience, I’d rather not give advice. I believe us pilgrims get more out of the journey when we go straight at it without the opinions and advice of others. My only exceptions – when asked a specific question or if the bit of information would really be helpful to the prospective pilgrim. Having said that…
Guidebook Info (David’s advice for today):
As per normal, there is a climb out of A Mesa first thing. No biggie though, at most 2 kilometers. The challenge is the descent after those 2 climbing kilometers – it is a steep descent for at least 7 kilometers, all the way down to the lake. If the downhills are harder for you than the uphills, take heed: use trekking pole(s), wear knee braces if you have creaky knees, tighten your shoelaces, and use the zig-zag technique to lessen the grade. You can do it! Just don’t let gravity take over and make you rush.

I also don’t like to give business advice, but here goes anyway. IF you are an entrepreneur, AND you like adventure travel, there is a need in Buspol. You could install a Zip Line from the spot of this picture down and across the valley and ending in downtown Grandas de Salime. This would reduce the time crossing the valley and eliminate potential knee damage on the downhill walk. If you do it, be sure to allow for ample breaking and have a soft landing zone for the Zip-Lining pilgrim.*

The lake is part of a hydroelectric system and beautiful if the photo is framed just right. The village that housed and supported the construction team is abandoned and gives off a strange I Am Legend-Book of Eli-The Road vibe. From the dam, it’s just a short walk up to a nice albergue-restaurant that has beautiful views and a fine Second Breakfast.
From the lake, it’s an entirely uphill, 5-kilometer walk into Grandas de Salime (wishing I’d had that Zip Line). Another good day, ending with good friends and good food!
